Flora and Canada seeking re-election

All three incumbent supervisors are running again in Roanoke County. Both county officials used the occasion of Northside High's reopening to announce.

Two Roanoke County elected officials used the ceremonial reopening of Northside High School to jointly announce their re-election bids.

Hollins District Supervisor Richard Flora and the district's school board member, Jerry Canada, said they will seek new terms in November, praising the cooperative spirit that has developed between the two bodies.

"What we're seeing here is the result of that planning," said Flora, pointing to the renovated building behind him. "Both of my children went to this school, so Northside is dear to me."

Flora's announcement means that all three incumbents on the board of supervisors are seeking re-election. So far, Flora is the only one without announced opposition. He served on the board from 1972 to 1975, when a new job took him out of the county. After returning, he was elected to the board again in November 2001 and re-elected in 2005. During each of those terms he served a one-year stint as chairman.

Flora works part time as county administrator for Craig County and is a retired administrator for Roanoke County Schools.

"I've got 40-some years in local government and I enjoy it," he said. "I don't like abuse, but I love the ability to make decisions for the future of the county."

Canada has served on the school board since 1992, when the board was still appointed by the supervisors.

"I try to earn my keep every day," he said, noting that every school in his district is either new or has been renovated.

"I especially appreciate the cooperation we've had from our board of supervisors," he said.
