Teen dies, two injured when car leaves road

A Thaxton teenager died Wednesday afternoon in a Bedford County crash that injured two other teens.

State police said the wreck occurred about 2:05 p.m. on Bell Town Road, about a tenth of a mile east of Draper Road and about three miles east of Bedford.

Police spokesman Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said a 2000 Dodge Intrepid was westbound when it ran off the right side of the road, struck several mailboxes and then hit a tree.

Chase Landon Jones, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene, Carpentieri said. Jones, the front seat passenger, was not wearing his seat belt.

Police said a back seat passenger, Kristopher Meader, 18, of Montvale was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. His condition was not released Wednesday night.

The car's driver, Dewey Lee Myles Perkins, 19, was taken to Roanoke Memorial with injuries that Carpentieri said did not appear life-threatening.

No charges had been filed Wednesday night, but the crash is still under investigation.

Carpentieri said Jones and Perkins may have been stepbrothers .
