Wildfire scorches Poor Mountain

A fire was burning about 100 acres of forest land late Sunday night on Poor Mountain near Elliston, fire officials said. No structures were at risk.

The Elliston Fire Department got a call about 4 p.m. for a brush fire southwest of Elliston, said Chief Malvin "Pug" Wells. Crews took about 20 minutes to reach the fire because of the incline and rough terrain, he said.

The fire was growing because of strong winds, Wells said. At its peak, the flames flared over trees 80 feet tall.

Crews initially approached the fire from Brake Road and later from Dark Run Road, more than a mile from Elliston, he said. Crews were planning to monitor the fire overnight.
