Bath County investigators continued searching without success Tuesday for a worker at The Homestead suspected of fatally shooting his two supervisors over the weekend.

Beacher F. Hackney, 59, fled on foot Saturday night after the shooting deaths of Ronnie Stinnett and Dwight Kerr at the Hot Springs resort, and he is now wanted on a charge of capital murder.

While there has not been a reported sighting of Hackney since the shootings, authorities released new information Tuesday about both the incident and their continuing efforts to locate Hackney.

Bath County Sheriff Larry Norfleet said Tuesday night that teams from Fredericksburg, Bedford and Roanoke will begin searching the area this morning with dogs.

"We're going to have ... dogs walk and retrace our steps," Norfleet said. "We're running through with everything we've got and making sure we didn't miss anything."

The Virginia Canine Response Team is one of the groups taking part in today's search.

Brad Dinwiddie, a VCRT captain, said the wilderness area search dogs being used could locate Hackney whether he's alive or dead.

"If he's in the area that we're given to search in, our dogs have the capability to find him," Dinwiddie said.

Norfleet also said Tuesday that Stinnett may have tried to defend others in The Homestead's kitchen before he was shot.

According to witness interviews, Norfleet said, "it appears he [Stinnett] was trying to get everybody else out of the gunman's way."

The sheriff declined to say how many others may have been present at the time, but said, "There were a lot of people in that area."

Police also said that they now believe the handgun used was brought onto the property by Hackney, and was not obtained after he arrived.

"We can't find anything to the contrary," Norfleet said. The weapon has not been recovered.

Anyone with information about Hackney's whereabouts should call the Bath County Sheriff's Office at 839-5300.
