Roanoke County fire displaces family, pets
A Roanoke County family and their two dogs were displaced by a house fire Friday afternoon.
Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department spokeswoman Jennifer Conley Sexton said firefighters were dispatched to the 6300 block of Greenway Drive about 1 p.m. Crews from Hollins, Vinton and Masons Cove responded and found smoke coming from a single-story home. The flames were extinguished in about 30 minutes and were contained to the living room, but Conley Sexton said heat and smoke had caused damage throughout the house. No one was hurt.
Conley Sexton said a woman who lives at the house came home, saw smoke coming from her house, called 911 and got one of her two dogs out safely. The other dog was able to escape on its own. The home is uninhabitable, and its residents are staying with family.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but investigators have said it was accidental and started in the living room. They estimated the damage at about $80,000.
