Roanoke grand jury indicts two men

In two unrelated incidents, two men face charges of attempted murder.

A Roanoke grand jury Monday indicted two men on attempted murder and other charges in two unrelated incidents.

Gary Arnold Mabes Sr., 42, was indicted on charges of attempted murder and aggravated malicious wounding in a Jan. 15 attack on a woman outside the Southwest Roanoke clinic where she worked.

Authorities have said that Mabes and 42-year-old Vicky Potter knew each other prior to the stabbing. About 8:15 a.m. a witness saw a man waiting outside the Jefferson Surgical Clinic where Potter worked as she walked toward the employee entrance.

The man stepped out to confront her, then stabbed her multiple times with a knife, according to witness accounts. He then got in a nearby car and fled. Potter was treated at a hospital for her injuries.

About four hours later, the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office arrested Mabes at a Cloverdale motel. Roanoke police initially charged him with malicious wounding. Monday's grand jury upgraded the charges.

Also Monday, the grand jury indicted 19-year-old Hampton resident Collin Anthony Rice on charges of attempted murder, malicious wounding, shooting at an occupied vehicle and using a firearm in a felony.

Roanoke police have said that on Dec. 18 just after 11:30 a.m., officers were called to the 3600 block of Thirlane Road, where they found a man who had been shot sitting inside a car. Court records identify the man as Shunron White.

A witness said he saw a woman driving the car and a man chasing it before the shooting. Afterward he saw a wounded man get out of the passenger seat when police arrived.

Police arrested Rice the same day after a large-scale search of the area near Roanoke Regional Airport.
