A single-vehicle wreck sent one person to the hospital Sunday afternoon, police said.
A Ford Taurus was traveling northeast in the 3700 block of Challenger Avenue in Roanoke County just before 3 p.m. when it left the road, according to a Roanoke County police news release.
The Taurus came to rest on its roof on a hill in front of the Sunoco gas station and the Children's Castle Early Learning Center.
"I was driving and saw her lose control," witness Danielle Reynolds said. "She must have been going 70 miles per hour.
"She had been swerving in and out of the lanes," Reynolds said. "She flipped three or four times."
The posted speed limit on that section of Challenger Avenue is 45 mph.
The driver of the Taurus, Patricia Burge, was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was listed in critical condition Sunday night, according to hospital spokesman Eric Earnhart.
Burge was partially ejected from the car, according to Roanoke County police Officer J.A. Johnson, and it was not clear if she was wearing a seat belt. Charges of driving under the influence are pending, he said.
Northeast traffic on Challenger Avenue was shut down from Mexico Way to Trail Drive during the incident. The road had reopened by about 4 p.m.
