Roads closed because of floods in Southwest Va.

BRISTOL -- Heavy rains have flooded more than 30 roads in far Southwest Virginia.

Michelle Earl, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Transportation, said 20 secondary roads in Scott County were closed Wednesday, as well as 12 in Lee County. The flooding caused Scott County to close schools for the day.

She said two roads also were closed in Washington County and a few were closed in Wise County.

VDOT reported five roads closed by flooding in Franklin County and two in Pulaski County.

In Franklin County, four routes were closed Wednesday in Rocky Mount, including Virginia 709 South (Blue Bend Road); Virginia 643 North (Coles Creek Road); Virginia 756 East (Old Forge Road); and Virginia 759 North (Rufus Road). A fifth route, Virginia 807 South (Mary Bett Hollow Road) in Ferrum was also closed. VDOT said Virginia 643 South (Alum Spring Road) and Virginia 602 East, both in Pulaski County, were also closed Wednesday.

A state police spokesman said no flood-related accidents were reported.
