Salem police identify man who died in fall
Salem police have identified a man who died Friday after he fell through the roof of a warehouse.
The police and fire departments were called to Salem Frame in the 1900 block of Salem Industrial Drive about 10:40 a.m. Friday.
The 29-year-old from Honduras, who police Lt. Mike Green identified Wednesday as Cesar Emilio-Romero Melgar, had been making repairs when he fell through an opening in the roof and dropped 30 feet.
He was declared dead at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Police waited to release his name until they could notify his family in his home country.
Melgar was working for John T. Morgan Roofing and Sheet Metal Co. of Roanoke. The company had paperwork that indicated Melgar was in the country legally, Green said.
However, according to U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement Services, Melgar was in the country illegally.
He had been deported once before but came back, said immigration and customs spokeswoman Cori Bassett.
The Virginia Department of Labor also is investigating the incident.
An official with the roofing company declined to comment.
