3 Va. hikers found in Kentucky; 1 hurt

WHITESBURG, Ky. -- A complicated search effort has resulted in the rescue of three hikers in southeastern Kentucky.

Authorities in Letcher County said that three men from Wise, Va., called for help Sunday night after losing their way on the Pine Mountain Trail System near the Kentucky-Virginia state line.

WYMT-TV in Hazard reported that one of the men fell and broke a leg.

Jenkins Police Chief James Stephens told the station that rescuers reached the men about 9 a.m. Monday.

Rain and fog complicated the rescue, but the injured man was brought out Monday afternoon, about two hours after rescuers guided the other hikers out.

A dozen emergency agencies from Kentucky and Virginia aided in the rescue.
