Man charged after Roanoke collision that injured 3 people
A two-vehicle collision sent three people to the hospital Monday afternoon, Roanoke police said.
A GMC Jimmy was traveling southwest on 10th Street just before 1:30 p.m. when it ran a red light and struck a Ford Contour traveling northwest on Loudon Avenue, according to Roanoke police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson. The Jimmy struck a light pole on the right side of 10th Street and ran down a grassy embankment, police said, while the Contour came to rest facing north on 10th Street.
The driver of the Jimmy, Amadeo Alfaro, 28, of Roanoke; his passenger, Luis Helnades, 21, of Roanoke; and the driver of the Contour, Charles Wilson, 31, of Roanoke were taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Johnson said. Wilson was the sole occupant of the Contour, she said.
Alfaro was discharged from the hospital by late Monday afternoon, according to Carilion spokesman Eric Earnhart, and Wilson was listed in good condition. Helnades' condition was not immediately clear.
Johnson said Alfaro was charged with running a red light and driving without an operator's license.
