Electrical fire leaves over 1,400 Roanokers temporarily in the dark
Power was restored by 9:30 p.m., a spokesman said.
About 1,400 customers were without power in Roanoke early Sunday night.
Power went out about 7 p.m. when an underground power line near Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital failed and a small fire started, said Appalachian Power spokesman Todd Burns. The cause of the failure was not immediately clear.
Technicians worked to bring power to the affected customers from an alternate feed, Burns said. Power was restored by about 9:30 p.m.
Smoke from the fire blew the lid off of the manhole above the power line, Burns said. City police and firefighters helped technicians working near the Hamilton Terrace parking lot of the hospital.
Police had closed Hamilton Terrace in the half-mile stretch between Belleview and Walnut Avenues.
The hospital was not affected by the outage, according to the city's emergency dispatch office.
