Fire damaged a one-story home in the 4400 block of Hubert Road Northwest in Roanoke late Wednesday night. No residents or firefighters were injured, but three dogs were rescued from the blaze.
Roanoke Fire-EMS Capt. Chris Trussler said crews responded about 10 p.m. to a report of smoke in the house. They found a small fire in a crawl space below the kitchen in the rear of the house.
The flames were contained to the kitchen and crawl space and were under control by 10:20 p.m., according to fire department spokeswoman Tiffany Bradbury.
No one was home at the time, Trussler said, but the homeowners arrived at the same time as the firefighters.
Firefighter Andy Foley found one of the dogs, a 9-month-old German shepherd named Cupid, inside.
"We brought it out of the house," said David Burnett, another firefighter who assisted. "It was barely hanging on."
Burnett said he gave the dog oxygen through a mask and it slowly began breathing again.
Cupid and a Yorkshire terrier were taken by an animal control officer to Emergency Vet Services on Peters Creek Road. The third dog did not need to be taken for treatment.
Bradbury said damage to the house was estimated to be about $100,000, but the cause of the fire was still under investigation Thursday afternoon.
