Arson suspected in Vinton house fire
Fire officials say they believe that the blaze that destroyed a Vinton house on Saturday was set intentionally.
Roanoke County Deputy Fire Marshal Brian Simmons said Monday the fire was ruled arson because of how quickly the house went up in flames.
"We feel like some type of accelerant was used to light the fire," he said.
No one has been charged.
The blaze was reported about 10:35 p.m. in the 1300 block of Hardy Road between Virginia 24 and the Blue Ridge Parkway. When firefighters arrived five minutes later, the house was engulfed in flames and the roof was collapsing. They battled the flames for more than an hour.
No one was home when the fire broke out. The house is a total loss, fire officials said.
Vinton police Sgt. Ben Cook on Monday identified the resident of the home as Shawn Combow. The house is owned by Geraldine Combow, according to online tax records.
Cook said detectives have spoken with Shawn Combow and with people who may have information about the fire.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is helping with the investigation because of the size of the fire, Simmons said.
