Hollins University nets gift of $3 million

Hollins University received $3 million from two of its most reliable donors, the school announced Thursday.

Frank and Jane Batten presented the money to the Hollins leadership program that bears the family name, the Batten Leadership Institute. It is the latest in a string of donations the couple have given the school over the past 13 years.

Frank Batten, 81, is the retired chairman and chief executive officer of the Norfolk-based entity now called Landmark Media Enterprises, owner of The Roanoke Times. Jane Batten is a graduate of the Hollins class of 1958.

The Battens' gift comes in the midst of the university's $125 million capital campaign. Donors have committed $96 million to the drive, which ends in June 2010.

The Batten family has history with Hollins, where three generations of women in the family attended. Frank and Jane Batten have given the school more than $6 million since 1995.

The announcement comes a week after the couple pledged a two-part gift worth as much as $70 million to Frank Batten's high school alma mater, the Culver Academies, in Indiana.
