Wrecks sends eight to hospital; causes still unknown, police say
Eastbound U.S. 460 in Bedford County was closed for about two hours Wednesday night following two separate crashes, according to Virginia State Police.
Spokesman Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said the first incident occurred about 6:15 p.m. near Wilkerson Mill Road in Montvale.
Mathis Glauser of Bedford was traveling east in a Nissan Versa when, for reasons that remain unclear, he wrecked, Carpentieri said. No other vehicles appeared to be involved in that crash.
According to Carpentieri, the Nissan was blocking the left lane of U.S. 460, and two approaching cars stopped in the road. As Glauser stood on the shoulder, a Chevrolet Suburban approached and was unable to stop behind the other cars. The Chevrolet went onto the shoulder, struck Glauser, then overturned.
Carpentieri said Glauser, along with seven occupants of the Chevrolet, were taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with what he described as non-life-threatening injuries. He said no charges have been filed but the incidents remain under investigation.
The Virginia Department of Transportation said U.S. 460 reopened about 8:15 p.m.
