Roanoke police officer promoted

Chris Perkins has been named deputy chief of operations for the Roanoke Police Department.

Perkins, formerly the captain of the criminal investigations bureau, replaces Steve Lugar, who retired in November to become chief of police and director of security services at Carilion Clinic. Perkins' promotion was effective Tuesday.

"He's going to be a tremendous asset to the police department and the city -- and not just now, but for years to come," said police Chief Joe Gaskins.

Among Perkins' qualifications for the job was his professional diversity, Gaskins said. Perkins comes to the post with 16 years of experience in patrol, vice and major crimes. He also has served as the department's accreditation manager and has been involved with the Community Oriented Policing Effort.

"He's pretty much been everywhere," Gaskins said.

Capt. Curtis Davis will now oversee the criminal investigations bureau. He was the captain over the patrol bureau, which will now be headed by Capt. Monti Lee.
