Roanoke inmate is found after 12 hours

The sheriff's office said Johnny Lee Lamonde had disappeared Friday while on work release.

A Roanoke City Jail inmate who disappeared Friday while on work release is back behind bars, the sheriff's office said Tuesday.

Johnny Lee Lamonde, 27, was found at a family member's house in Roanoke about 12 hours after he went missing, said Patricia Johnson, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.

Information about the inmate's disappearance was requested by The Roanoke Times several times since Friday, but the sheriff's office did not release details until Tuesday morning.

Johnson said the information was previously unavailable because officials were out of the office for Thanksgiving, and because the investigation into the incident was not complete.

The sheriff's office did not believe that the inmate's disappearance was a public safety threat, Johnson said.

"This gentleman is on work release," she said. "He's released every day."

Lamonde is serving a six-month sentence for grand larceny, according to court records.

As part of the jail's work release program, a family member picks him up for work in the morning.

Johnson would not name Lamonde's employer but said deputies discovered him missing when they realized that his workplace was closed for the holiday weekend.

Deputies found Lamonde about 5 p.m. Friday, but he initially "evaded deputies' attempts" to be taken into custody, Johnson said. She would not elaborate on that detail because of the investigation.

Lamonde was charged with resisting arrest and has been removed from the work release program, Johnson said.
