Roanoke Co. fire burns down family's home

Firefighters tackle a blaze Tuesday on Old Mountain Road in Roanoke County.
Fire destroyed a North Roanoke County home Tuesday afternoon, but no one was injured, officials said.
Crews from the Hollins and Vinton stations responded to a single-story, cedar-sided house in the 5900 block of Old Mountain Road about 1:30 p.m., according to Fire-EMS spokeswoman Jennifer Conley Sexton.
Flames were coming from the roof and chimney when the crews arrived, she said. Afternoon winds fueled the fire, spread it quickly across the roof and forced firefighters inside to evacuate.
"It was just too hot to stay inside," said Charlie King, Roanoke County Fire and Rescue Department battalion chief.
He said the flames rose "probably 10 or 15 feet above the roofline," but added that recent weather dampened the surrounding trees and ground and kept the flames from spawning a brush fire.
Conley Sexton said the blaze took about 90 minutes to control, but the flames took the roof off the house and left it a total loss.
A man and his two sons lived in the house, but Conley Sexton said no one was home when the fire started. They have been displaced but have somewhere to stay, she said.
One of the man's teenage sons said he arrived home to find the house engulfed in flames. He said he had lived in the house his entire life.
The family's pet dog was outside at the time and has been accounted for, but their cat is missing.
Fire investigators are assessing the damage estimates and the possible causes of the fire.
