Teen driver dies on way to school
A 16-year-old girl driving to Staunton River High School was killed in a three-vehicle wreck Monday morning in Bedford County, according to Virginia State Police.
Tiffany S. Laprade of Vinton was driving a 2001 Toyota Camry east on Virginia 24 about 7:30 a.m. when she crossed the center line just east of Virginia 653 near Chamblissburg, Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said.
She hit a westbound Dodge pickup truck, then crossed back into the eastbound lane and hit a Honda Accord.
Laprade died at the scene, he said. She was wearing a seat belt and was the only person in the car.
Carpentieri said he had no information about possible injuries to other people involved in the wreck.
Laprade was a junior at Staunton River High, where counselors were available to students Monday, Bedford County Schools spokesman Ryan Edwards said.
She was a member of Family Career and Community Leaders of America, a nonprofit organization that promotes personal growth and leadership development through family and consumer sciences education, Edwards said.
She also served on the student council and was interested in volunteering.
Laprade's family could not be reached Monday.
Her death is one of many teen driving fatalities in the county in recent years.
Between 1994 and 2006, 80 teen drivers were killed in wrecks in the New River Valley and the Roanoke region, according data from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Bedford County saw 13 of those deaths.
That prompted the formation of BEDCO CARES, a teen driving coalition in Bedford County.
And in August, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute and Bedford and Montgomery counties announced that they were launching a program to better train teen drivers.
The program, which VTTI hopes to put in place in the next two years, aims to address common driving mistakes by giving teens experience on closed-course tracks, and by monitoring their driving with in-vehicle devices that provide feedback.
The program also will include a parent-teen contract that puts the responsibility of safe driving on both parents and teens.
