State police investigate Glasgow police officer

Virginia State Police are investigating whether the only member of the Glasgow Police Department used taxpayer money to buy gas for personal use, a Rockbridge County official said Friday.

Rockbridge County Commonwealth's Attorney Robert Joyce said he called for the investigation last week after a Glasgow resident raised concerns.

That resident, Allen Hostetter, owns CC's Stop and Go. He said that over the past three months, he repeatedly saw Sgt. Damon Propst gas up the police vehicle and then fill gas cans, paying for it at the town's expense.

Propst said Friday that he sometimes uses his personal vehicle for undercover work, or when his patrol vehicle breaks down.

"The state police investigation is basically just to reassure the people that nothing was done wrong," he said.

Propst, the only member of the police department, remains on duty, Town Manager Ryan Spitzer said.

Joyce recused himself from the investigation because of a conflict of interest. The findings will be turned over to Buena Vista Commonwealth's Attorney Chris Russell.
