Trainer, recruit hurt in cruiser accident
A Roanoke County police recruit and instructor were taken to a hospital Tuesday after crashing during a low-speed driving exercise.
The two were taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Lt. Chuck Mason said.
The 22-year-old recruit and an instructor were at the Laurel Mountain Police Driving Center near Dixie Caverns about 11:30 a.m. when the cruiser traveled down an embankment and overturned in a creek, Mason said.
The car partly filled with water, assistant police chief Donna Furrow said.
Police were waiting until today to interview the recruit, instructor and witnesses. It remained unclear Tuesday how the wreck happened and how the recruit and instructor got out of the car, Furrow said.
The recruit had been practicing how to regain control of the car after running off the side of the road, Furrow said.
The names of the recruit and instructor were not released Tuesday because some family had not been notified.
Roanoke County police will investigate the crash.
