Roanoke man indicted on murder charge
A grand jury handed down the indictment in the Sept. 25 death of Derrick Hobson.
A Roanoke grand jury indicted a Roanoke man Monday on a murder charge in the Sept. 25 shooting death of Derrick Hobson.
Deandre Antonio Miller, 20, was also indicted on a charge of using a firearm in commission of a felony.
Roanoke police, working with U.S. Marshals as part of a fugitive task force, arrested Miller on Thursday at the Jamestown Place apartment complex in Southeast Roanoke. Miller was arrested on a charge of malicious wounding because the warrant for his arrest was sworn out before Hobson died. It was unclear Monday if prosecutors would pursue that charge.
Miller is being held at the Roanoke City Jail without bond.
Officers were called to the 500 block of Madison Avenue Northwest just after 3 p.m. Sept. 25.
They found Hobson, 20, lying in the street about 50 yards from Sweet Union Baptist Church. He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he died about 10 p.m.
Police searched a gold-colored Chrysler Concorde sedan in the church's parking lot shortly after the shooting. They found a single shell casing in plain view inside the car, according to a search warrant.
Police are not naming the vehicle's owner, but Alvin Brown, who lives next to the church's parking lot, said Hobson drove the car.
The Rev. Edward Burton has said that the car does not belong to anyone at the church.
Hobson's death marked the city's 11th homicide this year.
