A kayaker was found dead Saturday night along the New River in Grayson County, according to a news release from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

The release identified the kayaker as Elwood O. Montgomery, 63, of Mount Airy, N.C.

The body was found after a woman called the Grayson County Sheriff's Office about 9 p.m. to report an overdue kayaker. She told officers that she and her husband had been kayaking on the New River near Camp Dickerson when she went ashore at the campground. Her husband continued to kayak and fish in the area but did not return to the campground as planned.

Police officers and rescue crews searched the area and located a kayak about a quarter of a mile below Camp Dickerson at 10:30 p.m. Members of the Baywood Search and Rescue team located the body of a man nearby at 11 p.m. He was not wearing a life jacket, the release said.

Montgomery's body was sent to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke to determine an exact cause of death, said Sgt. Rolland Cox with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

The incident is under investigation.
