Train car spills resin into creek

Crews in Clifton Forge will be cleaning up for several days after a tank car derailed Friday, leaking as much as 10,000 gallons of liquid resin in a rail yard, officials said.

The cause of the derailment, reported about 3:30 a.m., is being investigated, said Town Manager Tracey Shiflett.

Initial reports indicate that two tanks in the CSX rail yard were struck by another rail car, rupturing one of the tanks, Shiflett said. No one was hurt.

Some of the resin, which is used as a sizing agent to make paper, seeped into the nearby Dry Creek, where it was contained.

Crews will likely use a vacuum to remove the contamination, said Allen Linkenhoker, pollution response coordinator for the Department of Environmental Quality.
