2 face new charges in Henry Co. slayings

A grand jury changed the counts against the men from first-degree murder to felony charges.

Two suspects in a Henry County triple homicide face new charges following a Monday meeting of a grand jury.

The Henry County grand jury indicted both Maurice Pritchett, 32, and Jordan Stockton, 31, on three counts of felony murder, three counts of using a firearm in a felony and one count each of possession of a firearm by a felon and conspiracy to possess cocaine.

Felony murder is a legal term for a killing that happens unintentionally as a result of the commission of a felony. The charge carries a maximum punishment of 40 years, the same as second-degree murder. Both men earlier had been charged with first-degree murder.

Two other suspects, both 17 at the time of the killings, have been charged with three counts each of first-degree murder in the June 23 shooting deaths of Gabriel Rene Rogel-Mirafuentes, Jose Martin Perez-Lopez and Filiberto Martin Loredo-Morales. Deputies found the slain men shortly after 1 p.m. that day in a home at the Ridgecrest Trailer Park in Collinsville.

Henry County authorities have said they consider the slayings to be drug-related.

The 17-year-old defendants also each face robbery and firearms charges related to the triple homicide. One of the teenagers, Carl Deshawn Turner, has previously been convicted as an adult in Martinsville Circuit Court of receiving stolen goods. Henry County authorities have not publicized the name of the other teenage boy.

Judges have yet to determine whether either teenager's case should be certified to a grand jury. Under Virginia law, a teenager 14 or older charged with murder is automatically tried as an adult.

The preliminary hearing for Turner is scheduled Friday in Henry County General District Court.

Henry County Commonwealth's Attorney Bob Bushnell has previously made statements implying that investigators do not consider Pritchett and Stockton to be triggermen in the slayings. The prosecutor could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
