Man, boy injured in Salem crash

A Roanoke County man and a 6-year-old boy were hospitalized Friday night after a vehicle collided with their motorcycle, officials said.

The crash occurred about 7 p.m. on West Main Street in Salem, according to Lt. J.C. Blomberg of the Salem Police Department.

He said a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 1978 Honda motorcycle with a sidecar were both traveling west. As both vehicles approached Horner Lane, the Jeep made a U-turn in front of the motorcycle and struck the sidecar, which was carrying the child.

The driver of the motorcycle and the boy were both taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with what Blomberg said were not life-threatening injuries. He said he was not releasing the name of the motorcycle's operator, but said the man and the child shared the same last name and the same address and appeared to be related. Blomberg said the driver of the Jeep, whose name is not being released because he is 16, was charged with reckless driving.
