Reward offered for information on killing
A private donor and the city of Roanoke are offering an $11,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the death of George Edwards Rogers.
Rogers, 89, was found dead Aug. 18 in his home in the 1300 block of Orange Avenue. He had obvious head trauma, according to a search warrant filed in Roanoke Circuit Court.
Rogers was a fixture in his Northwest Roanoke neighborhood, where he would hand out food, and was active in First Baptist Church.
The city put up $10,000 for the reward; the private donor gave $1,000, police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said. Police did not release the donor's name Friday because they did not know if the person wanted to be publicly identified, she said.
Rogers' death is the ninth homicide in Roanoke this year but the only killing that is unsolved.
Anyone with information about Roger's death should call police at 853-5959 or 853-2212.
