Pharmacist intercepts robbery
An armed Bassett pharmacist thwarted an attempted prescription drug robbery Saturday but no one was hurt, officials said.
According to a release issued by the Henry County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred about 10 a.m. at Harder's Drug Store in the 3400 block of Fairystone Park Highway. A man, believed to be in his 20s, entered the store with his face partially covered and told the pharmacist to give him all of the store's OxyContin and any other pain pills. The pharmacist drew a handgun and the man ran out of the store.
Sgt. Curtis Spence said no shots were fired. He said the investigation had not yet produced a description of the suspect.
The man got into the front seat of a car and the driver backed the vehicle down the road toward Virginia 57 West (Riverside Drive), the sheriff's office said. The make of the car is not known but is believed to be a Ford Taurus painted grey, silver or light green. The car was missing its front license plate, and investigators said they believe the driver drove in reverse to avoid revealing the rear license plate.
Anyone with information regarding the crime is asked to call the Henry County Sheriff's Office at (276) 638-8751.
This is the second time in recent months that an attempt to steal prescription drugs has been stopped by an armed pharmacy employee. In July, a pharmacist in Southeast Roanoke drew a gun during a robbery attempt and fatally shot the suspect. The pharmacist also accidentally shot himself during a struggle for the gun.
