Water main break damages road
A broken water main closed part of a street and affected water service Thursday in some parts of Northwest Roanoke.
Sarah Baumgardner of the Western Virginia Water Authority said the 12-inch main broke during the early afternoon in the 4000 block of Melrose Avenue.
As a result, service and pressure levels were affected in areas around Melrose, including Hershberger and Peters Creek roads, but Baumgardner said they were able to isolate the main and restore water to most areas.
One lane of westbound Melrose was closed.
"There was a lot of water on the road," she said, adding that she believed there was some asphalt damage to the street.
Baumgardner said repairs to the line, which is 8 feet underground, began about 4 p.m., and water was restored to the area shortly before 8 p.m.
Employees at nearby Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and KFC said they experienced water problems but were able to stay open. Calls to the Pizza Hut near the site of the break were not answered Thursday night.
