Fire consumes house, displaces 11 people

Eleven people were displaced by a house fire Tuesday in Southwest Roanoke, but no one was seriously injured.

Crews were called about 6 p.m. to a house in the 4000 block of Griffin Road, according to Roanoke Fire-EMS spokeswoman Tiffany Bradbury. She said the house sits at the end of a steep, unpaved driveway made impassable to fire trucks by the rain, and crews had to extend 1,200 feet of hose to the blaze.

The house was fully involved when firefighters arrived, Bradbury said. Flames were showing from the basement and attic windows.

The fire was listed as under control by 6:35 p.m., and the house has been deemed a total loss.

It was unclear how many people were inside when the fire started, but Bradbury said 11 residents, both children and adults, were being aided by the American Red Cross on Tuesday night. One adult was treated for burns at the scene and released.

Investigators have ruled that the fire was caused by children playing with a candle, which fell onto a bed and ignited the sheets and mattress.

This is the second Roanoke house fire caused by children in less than a month.
