2 charged as threat gives way to gunfire

Two people were injured when they jumped from a second-story window.

Martinsville police arrested two men in connection with an abduction and malicious wounding that occurred early Sunday morning in the city, according to a statement.

Scott Coleman, the city's public information officer, said police responded at 3:50 a.m. to a residence in the 900 block of Askin Street on a report of shots fired.

Kenneth Ziglar and Natasha Hairston told police they were inside the residence when they heard someone knocking. Ziglar said he opened the door and saw two men he identified as Christopher James Hairston, 25, and Charles Anthony Hall, 31. The two men entered uninvited, Ziglar said, and Christopher Hairston threatened the occupants with a handgun when they tried to leave. Hall then blocked the door, Coleman said.

Coleman said he believes Natasha and Christopher Hairston are related but didn't know their relationship.

Ziglar reportedly struggled with Chrisopher Hairston over the gun, at which point Hall became involved, police said. During the struggle, Ziglar was hit in the head with the gun, causing a large cut, and the weapon discharged. Everyone in the apartment fled by jumping from a second-story window, and both Ziglar and Natasha Hairston broke their left legs in the jump, Coleman said.

Police detained Christopher Hairston and Hall in the 100 block of Askin Street.

Christopher Hairston of Martinsville was charged with malicious wounding, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, discharge of a firearm within an occupied dwelling and two counts of abduction.

Hall of Stanleytown was charged with two counts of abduction and two counts of assault and battery.

Martinsville police are asking anyone with information to call the Investigations Unit at 276-403-5301, the 911 Center, or Crime Stoppers at 276-632-7463.
