I-81 lanes closed after truck flips
The southbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Botetourt County were blocked Monday and stayed closed into the evening following a tractor-trailer wreck.
The incident occurred at mile marker 150 near Daleville, about 12 miles south of Buchanan, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said a 2001 Mack truck crashed about 1:30 p.m. as it attempted to merge onto the southbound lanes of the interstate from U.S. 220 north.
"I'm not sure if he came around the corner too quickly and the load shifted or what, but it overturned the truck and blocked both southbound lanes," Carpentieri said, adding that the rig was a total loss.
The driver, Demetrice Tillman, 31, of Hagerstown, Md., was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with what Carpentieri described as non-life-threatening injuries. Tillman, who was wearing a seat belt, was charged with reckless driving, Carpentieri said.
The truck was hauling what Carpentieri believed was a load of fine iron powder, and he said a hazardous materials crew had to be called in to offload the cargo so the truck could be turned upright.
Both southbound lanes remained closed until 9 p.m. Monday, VDOT said, and the blockage created backups that extended as far as six miles on the interstate. An interstate entrance ramp at the crash site also was closed.
