Motorcyclist in hospital after collision with cruiser

Police said the trooper's car hit the motorcycle during a high-speed pursuit in Henry County.

A Henry County man has been hospitalized after a collision with a state police vehicle during a high speed pursuit Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said that about 4:15 p.m. a trooper saw a 2008 Kawasaki ZX-1400 traveling at a high rate of speed along Kings Mountain Road near Collinsville. The trooper followed the motorcycle, which he reportedly clocked about 160 mph, but soon lost sight of it.

About 20 minutes later, Carpentieri said, another trooper traveling in an unmarked cruiser spotted the motorcycle on Virginia 836 and followed it, trying to get it to stop.

Carpentieri said the two vehicles approached the highway's T intersection with Preston Road and said that as both vehicles negotiated the corner "the motorcycle started slowing down to turn. The cruiser hit the motorcycle and the motorcycle struck a tree."

The collision, he said, "was unintentional" and the trooper involved was not injured.

The cyclist, Kerry Lowe, 36, of Spencer, was flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Carpentieri said. He said warrants have been obtained against Lowe on felony attempt to elude, reckless driving and not being licensed to drive a motorcycle. They have not been served because Lowe is still in the hospital, he said.

Carilion spokesman Eric Earnhart said Wednesday night he had no information regarding Lowe or his condition.

Carpentieri said the incident is being investigated.
