Extension passes without further progress on Mill Mountain proposal
Plans existed to build a community center, but seem to have been withdrawn at this time.
Two months after Valley Forward asked the Mill Mountain Advisory Committee to wait at least 60 more days before making any decision on the proposal to develop a building atop Mill Mountain, the project appears to have stalled.
The committee met Thursday without taking up the proposal for consideration, and Chairman Steve Higgs said there's technically no proposal to consider at this time.
"As far as I'm concerned I'm not going to put it on the agenda unless they bring it up," Higgs said.
He said the request from Valley Forward -- an advocacy group that consists largely of young professionals in Roanoke -- indicated the group needed at least 60 days, but didn't specifically say the group would be ready at that point.
Last year, the group proposed construction of a large inn and restaurant near the site of the former Rockledge Inn, which burned down in 1976. After meeting resistance from the advisory committee, Valley Forward submitted a new proposal for the smaller Rockledge Community Center, which would include a 5,000-square-foot "destination restaurant," a 3,000-square-foot community room and 2,000-square-foot cafe.
After attending the committee's April meeting, however, Valley Forward officials asked for the extension to consider questions posed by committee members. Members have said they have yet to receive copies of the questions. Higgs said he hadn't sent them because the proposal had been technically withdrawn from consideration.
"I'm perfectly thrilled to start that process again once they want to throw it in the hopper," Higgs said.
He said after the meeting, however, he'd make sure to e-mail the questions to Valley Forward this week so there was no miscommunication.
Valley Forward members declined to comment Thursday on the current status of the Rockledge proposal.
