Botetourt Co. supervisors mull scheduling evening meetings

The Botetourt County Board of Supervisors says it wants to make its meetings more accessible to the public.

To that end, the board is considering moving its monthly daytime meetings to the evening in an effort to accommodate residents who work during the day.

The board currently meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Greenfield Education and Training Center in Daleville. General business items are scheduled for discussion at 9 a.m., with public hearings scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.

At the board's regular meeting Tuesday, two supervisors questioned whether the meetings would attract more public attendance if they were held in the evenings.

Supervisors Chairman Don Assaid and Blue Ridge District Supervisor Billy Martin said residents who want to speak out on county issues but can't leave their day jobs would have more of an opportunity to address the board if public hearings were held in the evening about 6:30 p.m. The regular session could be held about 3 p.m.

County Administrator Jerry Burgess said scheduling evening meetings at Greenfield could be a problem.

The county will have to check the facility's schedule. The facility conducts classes through Virginia Western Community College, and Burgess said the supervisors might have to adjust their schedule if fall class times and dates have already been set.

The supervisors agreed to take up the matter at their September meeting.
