Biplane crash hurts pilot, daughter
TAPPAHANNOCK -- State police said that a pilot and his teenage daughter were injured when a biplane crashed shortly after takeoff from Tappahannock-Essex County Airport.
Sgt. Tom Cunningham said Tuesday that David Harvey, 62, of Heathsville and his daughter Daniella Harvey suffered "serious but non-life threatening injuries." They were airlifted to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond.
Cunningham said a witness reported seeing the 1980 single-engine Starduster SA300 take off about 3:30 p.m., then heard what sounded like engine trouble. The witness then saw the aircraft nosedive into a wooded area about 500 yards from the end of the runway.
The Federal Aviation Administration was en route to investigate.
