Woman zapped by lightning, but isn't injured

A woman in Salem was not injured Monday after an electric shock buzzed her on the head and blew one of her shoes off.

The incident happened at the Sonic restaurant on West Main Street about 3:30 p.m. -- the same time that the National Weather Service had warned of a severe thunderstorm in Salem.

The woman, a restaurant employee whose name was not available, was stunned when lightning struck a wireless transmitter box, sending a shock wave through the headset she was wearing as part of her uniform, said Capt. John Prillaman, a spokesman of the Salem Fire and Rescue Department.

All other employees who were wearing headsets heard a popping sound but were not shocked, he said.

The woman was standing about 5 to 7 feet from the transmitter box when the strike occurred. Paramedic crews examined her, but did not take her to a hospital because they determined she was not hurt, Prillaman said.

"She is the luckiest girl around," he said.

The department did not receive any other reports of injuries, flooding or major property damage related to Monday's storm, Prillaman said.
