Amherst Co. driver, 18, fined in child's death
AMHERST -- An Amherst County teenager has been found guilty of improper driving in the death of a toddler.
General District Court Judge Edwin Burnette fined Kaylie Silby $500 after a hearing Tuesday.
Silby, 18, testified that she was driving near 2-year-old Omarion Rose's home in the Lynchburg suburb of Madison Heights on Jan. 14 when her cellphone rang.
She said she momentarily took her eyes off the road as she reached to answer it, and thought she hit a pothole or perhaps a dog. She said she looked back, but saw nothing and kept driving.
Silby was initially charged with reckless driving, 58 days after the child's death.
