RICHMOND -- The Virginia State Corporation Commission reminds homeowners and contractors to call a state hotline before they dig in to summer building projects.

Dialing 811 connects to the state's notification center for Miss Utility, where employees will notify utility operators of the planned excavation or demolition. Utility operators will mark the underground lines, so contractors and property owners can excavate carefully.

The SCC is the agency responsible for enforcing the state Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act.
