Miss Va. preliminary competition concludes

Miss Greater Springfield and Miss Hanover were awarded scholarships. The contest ends tonight.

With another night of competition under their belt, Caressa Cameron and Caitlin Uze walked away with preliminary awards during the second night of the 2008 Miss Virginia Pageant on Friday evening.

After walking the runway in a bright pink bikini, Uze (Miss Greater Springfield) was awarded the $500 Audiotronic scholarship for Group A's swimsuit competition.

Miss Hanover Caressa Cameron secured a $1,000 scholarship from the Margaret Baker Foundation when she delivered a powerful vocal performance of the popular song "I Believe" by Fantasia Barrino for Group B's talent portion.

Mistress of Ceremonies and Miss America 1987 Kellye Cash kept the crowd entertained while serving as emcee and then performing a Pasty Cline tune.

A patriotic song set the tune for the evening wear portion of the competition as three former Miss Virginias sang "God Bless the USA" accompanied by vocalists Joshua Brown and Paul De Arras.

Friday marked the end of preliminary competition.

Tonight the top 11 semifinalists will be announced during the pageant's final night of competition. In addition to the top 10 semifinalists chosen by the judges, an 11th semifinalist will be "people's choice," decided by an Internet vote. Voting ended Friday.

Twenty-five contestants began the competition. There is no Miss Roanoke Valley.

The program will be broadcast live on WSET (Channel 13) beginning at 9 p.m.
