Standoff leads to a charge of abduction

A man was charged with abduction Thursday following a four-hour standoff in Southeast Roanoke, police said.

Spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said officers, led by an anonymous 911 tip, responded about 12:25 a.m. to the 1600 block of Padbury Avenue. Police found a woman coming out of the residence who said she had been held inside against her will by a man, whom she knew. She was not injured during the incident.

Johnson said police tried to contact the man several times but were unsuccessful.

When he came to the door about 4:30 a.m., members of a police tactical team apprehended him.

George Allen Wilhelm Jr., 24, of Roanoke was arrested and charged with abduction, Johnson said. She added that another man, Gary Hunley Jr., 25, of Roanoke, was also arrested and charged with obstruction for not cooperating during the incident.

According to Johnson, two children, a 4-year-old and an 18-month-old, were in the residence at the time. They are the children of Wilhelm and the woman he is accused of abducting.
