Teenage girl's case sent to grand jury
Melanie Engleman, 16, is charged with stabbing her on-and-off boyfriend to death.
The Roanoke police detective said that as he searched her, the 16-year-old girl told him she couldn't believe she had killed the only person she loved.
After hearing more testimony from Detective P.B. Caldwell and others on Wednesday, a judge in Roanoke Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court certified to a grand jury a murder charge against Melanie Elaine Engleman.
Engleman will be tried as an adult if she is indicted.
She is accused of stabbing her on-and-off boyfriend, 19-year-old William Christopher Linn, in the 1300 block of Baldwin Avenue in Northeast Roanoke the night of June 2.
Linn died at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital early the next morning.
Senior Assistant Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney Alice Ekirch told Judge John Ferguson on Wednesday that the medical examiner determined Linn had died of a stab wound to the chest.
Caldwell testified that police found the weapon, a steak knife, stuck in the ground near Thrasher Park, not far from the where the attack happened.
Another witness, Tai Reid, told the court that she and Linn were together at her Vinton home the night of the stabbing, and that Engleman had called, screaming at Linn.
Engleman told the two that she was on her way to Reid's house in the 1200 block of Daleton Avenue, which is close to the Roanoke city line.
A short time later, three young women showed up, banging on Reid's front door, she said. Linn left through the back door.
About seven minutes later, Reid said she heard Linn yelling for someone to call an ambulance.
He ran to Reid's front porch and sat on a chair, bleeding and looking pale, Reid said.
When Vinton police officers arrived and asked Linn who had injured him, he gave them Engleman's name, Reid said.
Engleman was expressionless as she sat next to her defense attorney, Chris Kowalczuk, and listened to the testimony.
Her parents were at the hearing but declined to comment afterward. Linn's family also did not want to talk about the hearing.
Engleman is being held without bond.
