Henry man killed in head-on crash; 4 hurt
Officials pronounced the 26-year-old man dead at the scene after Friday's accident.
A motorist was killed and four people were injured in a two-vehicle collision Friday afternoon in Henry County, Virginia State Police said.
Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said the crash occurred about 5:20 p.m. on Virginia 687 (Stones Dairy Road).
Joseph Lee Sells, 26, of Henry, was traveling north with three passengers in a 1994 Chevrolet Lumina when his car crossed the center line and struck a 1998 Mazda Millenia head-on, Carpentieri said.
He said the Chevrolet caught fire after the accident, and a passer-by and a nearby resident fought the flames with a fire extinguisher.
Carpentieri said officials pronounced Sells dead at the scene.
The driver of the Mazda, Bobbie Jo Gutowski, 26, of Ridgeway, was flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was wearing her seat belt.
Two passengers in the Chevrolet -- Mary Bryson, 33, of Henry, and Timothy Bean, 26, of Martinsville, also were flown to Roanoke Memorial. Carpentieri said Bean was not wearing his seat belt and it was unclear if Bryson wore hers.
The third passenger inthe Chevrolet, Robert Ray Cochran, 45, of Stuart, was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, and then taken to Roanoke Memorial. Police said Cochran was not wearing his seat belt.
Carpentieri said the crash is under investigation.
