Hundreds expected at benefit for officer
A fundraiser for Bryan Lawrence will include a motorcycle ride, a silent auction and a raffle.
Organizers putting on a fundraiser Saturday for an injured Roanoke police officer are expecting hundreds of people -- possibly 1,000 -- to turn out.
The money collected from a motorcycle ride, silent auction and raffle will benefit Officer Bryan Lawrence, who was paralyzed about a month ago when he was attacked while making an arrest.
Lawrence is at an Atlanta rehabilitation facility, where he has shown progress in his recovery. In an update at carepages.com, Lawrence reported that he could move fingers on both hands, and a previous update said he could point his toes.
Registration for the ride is $20 per motorcycle and begins at 8 a.m. in the Roanoke Civic Center parking lot.
Riders will start at 10 a.m. They'll head down U.S. 460 to Bedford, then ride along Virginia 122 to Smith Mountain Lake and take Virginia 679 and U.S. 220 back to Roanoke.
Meals will be available after the ride for $7 per person. There also will be a silent auction and raffle.
Another fundraiser for Lawrence and his family is planned for June 21. That event, which will include a car show, cruise-in, concert and wine tasting, begins at 1 p.m. at Virginia Mountain Vineyards, 4204 Old Fincastle Road, Fincastle. Tickets are $20.
At 2 p.m., Roanoke police will escort the cruise-in to the police station, where the cars will stop briefly before the fallen officer statue.
The concert begins at 6 p.m.
