Bedford group offers vaccine for rabies at low cost
The shots cost $8 and will be given at six sites around Bedford County on Saturday.
The Bedford Humane Society is teaming up with Bedford County, the Virginia Department of Health and local veterinarians to offer rabies vaccination clinics at six sites around the county Saturday.
"The clinics are important to the citizens of the county for a few reasons," said humane society President Mary Beverley. "The clinics stress the importance of following Virginia law, which requires that all dogs and cats age 4 months or older be vaccinated against rabies."
Cash or checks will be accepted for the shots, which are $8 each.
"This provides a low-cost, easy-access way for citizens to comply with the law. By having more animals protected against rabies we will lessen the chance that humans are infected or injured by rabid animals."
Animals must be brought in on a leash or carrier.
Clinics will be open at the following locations and times:
- Riverside Veterinary Hospital, 7050 E. Lynchburg Salem Turnpike in Goode, from 1 to 3 p.m.
- Bedford Animal Hospital, 1064 Centerville Road in Bedford, from 10 a.m. to noon
- Big Island Rescue Squad, 10961 Lee Jackson Highway in Big Island, from 11 a.m. to noon
- Huddleston Volunteer Fire Department, 5377 Smith Mountain Lake Parkway in Huddleston, from 2 to 4 p.m.
- Staunton River Veterinary Clinic, 1037 Lipscomb Road in Moneta, from noon to 2 p.m.
- Boonsboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue Co., 1065 Lee Jackson Highway in Lynchburg, from 10 a.m. to noon
Three-year vaccines are available for pets that previously received the one-year vaccine. Proof of previous vaccination is required for the three-year shot.
