Fire truck involved in crash; 2 killed

Two people were killed in a two-vehicle wreck Monday evening in Botetourt County, Virginia State Police said.

State Police spokesman Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said that the accident occurred at 6:10 p.m. on U.S. 220 north of Eagle Rock. He said it happened just south of Kelley's Market, a gas station and convenience store.

An Eagle Rock Volunteer Fire Department fire truck was traveling north on U.S. 220 in response to a minor two-vehicle accident near Kelley's Market. While in route, the fire truck collided with a pickup truck, Carpentieri said.

Two people in the pickup truck were killed, Carpentieri said, and the driver of the fire truck was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. He was the only person in the fire truck, Carpentieri said.

Police were not releasing the names of any of the three people involved as of Monday night.

The accident is under investigation, Carpentieri said.
