Boater who died at Claytor Lake identified

A boater who died Friday at Claytor Lake has been identified as Mike Allen Petty, 58, officials said.

Sgt. Charlie Mullins of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries said the Draper resident fell out of a boat as a result of an unknown medical condition.

Mullins said he did not believe Petty drowned.

The game department received information from the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office about 1:30 p.m. Friday that there had been an incident across from the Allisonia boat ramp in the southernmost part of the lake.

Officers found a man at the water's edge. He had been trolling in a 14-foot johnboat when he fell into the water.

Mullins said that Petty fell out of the boat and that his brother, who was also a passenger, helped him swim to the shoreline.

An investigation is continuing, Mullins said.
