A Fieldale teenager was shot Tuesday night when a gunman fired into a crowd, police reported.

According to city spokesman Scott Coleman, the incident occurred about 7:15 p.m. in the 1400 block of Fayette Street in Martinsville.

Coleman said Taniel Irby, 19, told police he was with a group of people outside an apartment complex when he heard a shot fired. Irby said that as the group scattered, he realized he had been shot in the leg and was taken to the hospital by a friend.

Irby was taken to Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, Coleman said. His condition was not available Tuesday night.
