Firefighters douse blaze on mountain

Fire crews spent several hours Friday fighting a brush fire on Poor Mountain in Roanoke County.

According to Roanoke County Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Jennifer Conley Sexton, the blaze burned a total of about five acres of steep wooded land near Honeysuckle Road. That road was shut down Friday during the fire.

It started about 4 p.m., Conley Sexton said, and was fought by Roanoke County firefighters, including crews from Back Creek, Bent Mountain, Cave Spring and Fort Lewis. Firefighters defended several structures in the area, including a house and some television transmitters, from being burned.

The Virginia Department of Forestry also provided personnel and equipment -- a bulldozer was used to dig a containment line around the south side of the fire, and a helicopter, drawing from a pond near Tinsley Lane, made water drops.

The blaze was under control by about 9:30 p.m., Conley Sexton said. Crews from Roanoke County Fire and Rescue and the Department of Forestry planned to remain on the scene Friday night to monitor the area, and firefighters are set to return to the site today for cleanup.

The cause of the fire and the cost of fighting it are not yet known. No one was injured and there was no damage to structures.
